What’s on the Menu for Christmas?

Christmas often feels like a mad dash to pack in as much as possible, last-minute shopping, endless school events, office parties, and decorations. It’s as if the world conspires to squeeze in every activity before the year ends!

I used to get so consumed by the whirlwind of tasks and expectations that I’d end up completely drained physically and emotionally. But a few years ago, I decided to change that. Christmas wasn’t going to be about me or my checklist anymore. Instead, I shifted my focus to gifting my time, energy, and resources to bring joy to others especially those who could never repay.

Christmas is about teaching my kids and everyone around me the true meaning of the season: the gift of Jesus Christ, who came to deliver us from sin and death.

I’ll admit, it’s not always easy to resist the pull of picture-perfect trees, matching family PJs, and elaborate meals. And no guilt if you love those things! But for me, the joy of Christmas lies elsewhere.

This Year’s Christmas Menu

Here’s what’s on my Christmas menu this year. Feel free to borrow or add your twists!

1. A Big Serving of Gratitude

My family and I kicked off December with the 50 Moments of Gratitude Challenge. Each day, we take a few minutes to reflect on 2024 and write down moments we’re grateful for.

So far, it’s been exciting, especially with my 8-year-old leading the charge! He’s proudly written the most entries and makes it a point to ask us daily how far along we are with our lists. It’s been heartwarming to see everyone participating, even in a year that came with its share of challenges.

2. A Side Dish of Service

Giving back has become one of our most fulfilling Christmas traditions. This year, we’ve volunteered at a local charity and an elderly care home offering our time, sharing smiles, and singing carols to brighten someone else’s day.

At home, we’re intentionally serving each other through small acts of kindness and practicing patience. We’ve also reminded ourselves that the gift of service is best given with plenty of love and warm hugs.

3. A Generous Helping of Presence

Not present—presence.

I’m blessed to have an office shutdown this season, so I’m taking full advantage by turning off notifications, setting my phone to “Do Not Disturb,” and focusing on being truly present for my family and friends.

From board games and storytelling to cheesy holiday movies and loads of comfort food, we’re leaning into activities that bring laughter and connection. We’re also opening our home to friends who don’t have family nearby, ensuring no one feels alone this Christmas.

4. A Sweet Sprinkle of Memories

Some of the best Christmas memories are rooted in the simplest traditions.

This year, we’re bringing the festive spirit to life by making chin-chin (a popular Nigerian snack), baking cookies, and experimenting with chocolate drinks inspired by my girls. In addition to some karaoke and dance-offs to our favourite carols, and late-night chats about dreams for the year ahead. It’s these small, joy-filled moments that truly stick.

5. A Dash of Reflection

As a family, we’ve scheduled time to reflect on 2024, sharing lessons we’ve learned, how we’ve grown, and what we hope for in the new year. Over finger food and hot chocolate, we’ll unwrap the moments that shaped us this year.

What’s On Your Menu?

This year, I’m choosing simplicity, joy, and connection.

So, what’s on your Christmas menu? Is it a moment to serve someone else, a conversation that sparks joy, or an act of gratitude that warms your heart?

Let’s make this Christmas less about doing and more about being.
