I flung my yearly goals… here’s why

What happens when the highest goals in every area of my life are checked off?

Recently, I have been pondering this question

And even more so after reading Bob Buford’s Halftime: Moving from Success to Significance

You may have perceived from my musing that I am a deep thinker.

Sometimes it is too serious! ✌.

I have always believed that life should be more than the to-do lists, deadlines, and endless goals and aspirations.

I believe that we should all live for something greater than these.

That belief has shaped how I approach motherhood, relationships, my career aspirations and, honestly, how I see life in general.

Now, do not get me wrong, I am still your high-achieving, vision-board-making, sticky-note-everywhere type of girl. If you have been in my inner circle, you already know how I roll. My goals are bold, clear, daring, and very well-articulated.

But lately, I have been wondering… What happens when my highest goals are checked off?

When I have hit those big wins in family, faith, career, finances and personal growth.

What then?

These thoughts have been my musing since this year began.

And honestly, I do not want a health scare or a major life shake-up to be the reason I finally answer this question and start living intentionally.

You know those types of events that place you right at the edge of life where everything suddenly becomes clear?

So yes, I flung my yearly goals. (Don’t copy me o )
But I’ve still got the bigger picture in view, just more focused on living beyond myself.

Maybe it’s a phase, maybe it’s more.
Either way, this is how I’m choosing to live now:

  • I am eating what I love (still healthy… calories can argue with themselves).
  • I love people in my space a little more (God is helping me sha. )
  • I am watching spring unfold around me, and with the “dead-looking” trees sprouting again. It is kind of exciting seeing this cycle of life.
  • I’m reading more, not because of a goal, just because I enjoy it. Sometimes paperbacks, sometimes audiobooks.
  • I’m listening to song lyrics and singing aloud. This season my favorite is, it’s “Counting My Blessings” by Onos & Seph Schlueter and “One More Day” by Sons of Sunday.
  • I am having more conversations, meeting more people, listening to more ways I can help, which often is just a listening ear and an empathic heart.
  • I am planning to travel more, exploring the sights of my corner of the world.
  • I’m resting deliberately. Watching silly movies that make me laugh till my belly hurts.
  • I’m trying to catch up on skincare with my teenage daughters (who make my effort look like child’s play).
  • I am soaking up the endless chatter of my 8-year-old about footballers, clubs and aspirations

I appreciate more the opportunities life has brought my way, simple and steady, but beautiful.

The whole purpose of my writing to you today is to remind you to

Live!

To live intentionally!!

To live for something greater ….. if you haven’t found that you will eventually

Live as one who has been given an abundance of life, love, wisdom, and ideas.

Like a spring that flows with good things, spreading into your sphere, people and the world.

“Out of your innermost being shall flow rivers of living water…” (John 7:38)

Every great person we admire, from Mother Teresa to Nelson Mandela to Gandhi to Martin Luther King (and even the unsung heroes in your life), all lived beyond themselves.

They lived for something greater.

So, this is me asking again – What happens when your highest goals are checked off?

I’m still figuring it out.

Please hit reply and share your thoughts.

My word for you today is “The quality of life is defined by breathtaking experiences, not by how long we live. “Collect moments, not things.” Possessions fade, but memories last forever. Prioritise experiences over material wealth. The best way to pay for a lovely moment is to enjoy it.” – Richard Bach
